New Release Round-Up 08-07-15
LA LUZ - Weirdo Shrine - Hardly Art
For most, a brush with death would be cause for retreat, reflection, and reluctance, but Seattle band La Luz found something different in it: resilience. Having survived a high-speed highway collision shortly after releasing their 2013 debut LP, It’s Alive, La Luz, despite lasting trauma, returned to touring with a frequency and tirelessness that put their peers to shame. Over the past year-and-a-half of performing, the band arrived at a greater awareness of their music’s ability to whip eager crowds into a frenzy. In response, frontwoman Shana Cleveland’s guitar solos took on a more unhinged quality. The basslines (from newly-installed member Lena Simon) became more lithe and elastic. Stage-dives and crowd-surfing grew to be as indelible a part of the La Luz live experience as their onstage doo-wop-indebted dance moves.
LANGHORNE SLIM & THE LAW - The Spirit Moves - Dualtone Music Group
Sometimes, truth can’t be explained. But it can be felt, running wild through a song. “I don’t want to tame myself. I want to be wild,” says Langhorne Slim. “If I can continue to refine the wildness but never suffocate or tame it, then I’m on the right path. Because it is a path. I feel it.” The Spirit Moves is Langhorne’s newest artistic attempt to refine the wildness. The result is an effervescent collection of his now-signature, cinematic, joyful noise, rooted in folk, soul, and blues. The album marks his second with rock-solid band The Law, and the highly anticipated follow-up to 2012’s critically acclaimed The Way We Move.
FRANK TURNER - Positive Songs For Negative People - Interscope Records
Frank Turner releases his sixth studio album through XtraMile/Interscope. Positive Songs For Negative People is the singer-songwriter's sixth album and the follow-up to 2013 s critically acclaimed Tape Deck Heart . It was made with his trusted backing band The Sleeping Souls and produced by Butch Walker in Nashville. "I feel like this record is my definitive statement, a summation of the first five records," says Turner.
NEVER SHOUT NEVER - Black Cat - Warner Bros
Alternative pop band Never Shout Never, aka Christofer Drew and his fellow bandmates, release their brand new, highly-anticipated studio album, entitled Black Cat, via Warner Bros. Records. The album features the single "Hey! We OK."
GREGG ALLMAN - Gregg Allman Live: Back To Macon, GA - Rounder
Gregg Allman is one of the most acclaimed, beloved, and awarded icons in rock and roll history. As a founding member of the legendary Allman Brothers Band and in his own storied solo career, Allman has long been a gifted, natural interpreter of the blues; his soulful and distinctive voice is one of the defining sounds in the history of American music. Although the Allman Brothers wrapped up their forty-five year career in 2014, Gregg Allman shows no signs of slowing down. With the help of his eight-piece band and special guest Devon Allman, Gregg delivers ferociously high-energy and emotive performances. Captured at the venerable Grand Opera House in the town where the Allmans got their start, this two-CD set features 16 fan favorites including 'Whipping Post,' 'Melissa,' and 'Midnight Rider.' The release is available in the following formats: 2CD, 2LP, DVD, Blu-ray, 2CD/DVD Combo & 2CD/Blu-ray Combo
MAC DEMARCO - Another One - Captured Tracks Rec.
Like the days of Steely Dan or Harry Nilsson releasing a classic album every year (or less) comes Mac DeMarco’s Another One, a mini-LP announced one year after the release of the meteorically successful Salad Days. Written and recorded during the downtime between a relentless touring schedule, Another One is an eight-track release that expands the arsenal of Mac’s already impressive catalog, showing the maturity of his progression as songwriter. It’s a bit more refined, a bit more sophisticated, but nonetheless retains the guts and soul of classic Mac.
LINDI ORTEGA - Faded Gloryville - Last Gang Records
There’s a sign on the outskirts of town. A buzzard sits atop it. The grass brown and parched below. It’s dusty, faded, chipped at the edges, graffiti filling the empty white spaces, a bullet hole or two visible in the large, black letters that read: Welcome to Faded Gloryville. Leave your dreams behind. In the eyes and imagination of acclaimed Canadian singer-songwriter Lindi Ortega, it’s a place we’ve all been, we’re all familiar with or will one day know all to well. Some visit. Some stay. Some escape. Some leave only to return again. And for Lindi, it was also the source of inspiration — in title and in spirit — for her stunning new collection of country-kissed songs that make up her fourth full-length release on new Last Gang Record imprint, The Grand Tour.
