New Release Round-Up 10-16-15
JOSH RITTER - Sermon On The Rocks - Pytheas Recordings
Produced by Ritter and Tina Shoemaker (Queens of the Stone Age, Emmylou Harris), Sermon On The Rocks was recorded in two weeks at The Parlor Recording Studio in New Orleans. It's Josh Ritter's most confident, freewheeling record to date. Over the course of his acclaimed career, Ritter has released seven full-length albums, including his most recent, 2013's The Beast In Its Tracks, which debuted at #22 on the Billboard 200 and #8 on the Top Rock Albums chart.
BEACH HOUSE - Thank Your Lucky Stars (Vinyl out 10/16, CD out 10/30)
"Thank Your Lucky Stars is our sixth full length record. It was written after Depression Cherry from July 2014 - November 2014 and recorded during the same session as Depression Cherry. The songs came together very quickly and were driven by the lyrics and the narrative. In this way, the record feels very new for us, and a great departure from our last few records. Thematically, this record often feels political. It’s hard to put it into words, but something about the record made us want to release it without the normal “campaign.” We wanted it to simply enter the world and exist. Thank you very much, Beach House"
!!! (CHK CHK CHK) - As If - Warp Records
Combining punk abandon and tightly-coiled dance music has always been bonded into !!!'s DNA. It's this core plus their growth and mastery of songwriting that has seen them outlive the mid-2000s 'indie/dance punk' tag and has allowed them to consistently grow lyrically and sonically from album to album. As If is their most transcendent collection of songs yet.
HOLLY GOLIGHTLY & THE BROKEOFFS - Coulda Shoulda Woulda - Transdreamer
Coulda Shoulda Woulda is the most accomplished & compelling work to date from the unstoppable folk/rock duo.
THE FUZZ - Best Kept Secret
The Fuzz are total West Seattle Rock. Two guitars, bass and drums. Old enough to know better, but that just don’t matter. With Best Kept Secret, their 3rd album, they are planning to expand the 'hood. From the opening primal guitar turmoil of “Can’t Wait” to their rumbling tribute to Wilt Chamberlain and his 10,000 girls, the country-sleaze of “Charley Horse,” all the way to their epic closer, ”Call The Cops,” The Fuzz get it done. 100%
COHEED & CAMBRIA - The Color Before The Sun - 300 Entertainment
The Color Before The Sun is Coheed & Cambria's eighth full-length, and their first to stand outside the conceptual realm of the Amory Wars saga explored on all their previous albums. But that's not the only curve ball. It was cut with the band playing and singing live from the floor of a Nashville studio with producer Jay Joyce. Minimal overdubs were added later. Bassist/vocalist Claudio Sanchez penned ten uncharacteristically heart-on-sleeve personal songs based on his "raw emotions." He orchestrated them for Coheed in bright, punky pop, hooky emocore, and Coheed's trademark brand of spacy, post-hardcore, prog metal.
NEON INDIAN - VEGA INTL. Night School [Indie Exclusive Low Price] - Mom & Pop Music
Alan Palomo of Neon Indian recorded VEGA INTL. Night School over the span of four years at a number of crash pads across America, but most crucial to the album was a self-described "magical winter" the singer spent on a Carnival Fantasy Cruise ship with his brother, who played in the house band. (Insert chillwave joke here.) The album contains enough reggae and Balearic tropical breeze to prove Palomo doesn’t shy away from pleasing the lido deck, but beyond the kitsch, an extended stay in a floating, inescapable city is an apt metaphor for VEGA INTL. Night School, where the inherent danger of total immersion is offset by generous hospitality.
DEMI LOVATO - Confident - Hollywood Records
Just off the heels of an epic return with #1 single "Cool for the Summer," multi-platinum selling recording artist Demi Lovato has no plans to cool down as she swings into the fall season with her much-anticipated fifth studio album, Confident. The album marks Lovato's first release through a creative partnership between Hollywood Records, Island Records, and Safehouse Records- a label she created with Nick Jonas and their manager, Phil McIntyre.
