Dave Stewart and His Rock Fabulous Orchestra

The Dave Stewart Songbook Vol. 1

by Jim Fahy

Dave Stewart is the dude from The Eurythmics. He and his partner in crime, Annie Lennox, have sold over 75 million albums. If that wasn’t enough he’s written songs for pop royalty (like Mick Jagger and, uh, Celine Dion), cell phone companies want him to smash paradigms, and Bob “Freakin’” Dylan thinks he’s one of the greatest musicians on the planet. He takes pretty good photos, too. His resume is much larger than even what I’ve listed above, which is why it seems prudent to jump to this question: So what does the man who’s done it all do next? What if I told you “Gather a large orchestra, call it Dave Stewart and His Rock Fabulous Orchestra and perform your past glories with bold new arrangements and in a context that shows what a complete bad ass you are?” You’d look at me incredulously, no doubt, but indeed that is what the man has done with The Dave Stewart Songbook Vol. 1 and its accompanying hardcover book (featuring the man’s aforementioned photography skills) of the same name. But you know what’s really crazy? It works. Check it out.
