Not often enough does a recording so firmly grab you by the scruff of the neck, much less a transmission these days from the Jazz world. So its this kind of exception to form, both graphically with its cover font all in caps and exclamation points, (designed by Rune Grammofon label designer Kim Hiorthoy) to the attack of the playing itself that the Scorch Trio have become known for. These raw, vintage-style analogue recordings (mastered by Helge Sten of Supersilent and Deathprod) perfectly capture the unadulterated frenzy of Schorch Trio's headman and guitarist Raoul Bjorkenheim's dynamic brutalist playing all the while revealing the immense instrumental proficiency and sophistication of this trio. Matching the sheer violent fluency of Bjorkenheim's performance, drummer Paal Nilssen-Love keeps the album rooted in the disciplines of jazz, utilizing a small but perfectly formed kit to hammer out complex, erratic rhythms to match that explosive guitar work at every turn. The third member of the trio, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten switches between electric bass and electronics, supplying not only a low-end foundation but a suitable foil to Bjorkenheim's thunderous playing, even managing to keep the tone sedated and exploratory as a contrast to the rest of the action on display.
The best trick Scorch Trio albums pull off is their ability to be as viscerally exciting as they are technically accomplished, which was exhibited on their previous effort, Luggumt, and once again here on Brolt!. This trio continues to deliver these qualities in furious abundance.
