Damn Right Rebel Proud

Hank Williams III

Damn Right Rebel Proud

by Jim Fahy

Damn Right Rebel Proud follows 2006’s fierce and edgy Straight to Hell, which broke all the rules of country music while still managing to honor its traditions. Don’t look for any apologies on the sixth album from Hank Williams III. Filled with a self-described "Jekyll and Hyde" mix of disturbingly dark stuff and "good ol’ country," the straight-talkin’ Damn Right Rebel Proud carries on the family tradition that continues to bring new generations of music fans back to the Lost Highway for inspiration. The first single is the mutated truckers’ tune "Long Hauls and Close Calls," which Hank III refers to as the album’s "crossover track," explaining that "it’s got a little bit of the scream for the kids in black and a little bit of the banjo and dobro for the country folks." Simply put, Hank III is a unifier rather than a divider – and if his misfit dichotomy inspires country kids to be curious about punk (and vice versa) then we all win.
