Gaslight Anthem

The '59 Sound

by Matt Vaughan

This is the most promising new band. I can’t stop listening to this record. I can’t say there is anything complicated about these cats. They are Jersey born, so the homage to the Boss is apparent in their songs. However, they come out of the punk scene and are on LA-based SideOneDummy Records, home of the Casualties, Flogging Molly, Suicide Machines, and 7 Seconds to name a few.

The songwriting is packed full of late nights, highways, local diners, car radio, turnpikes, full moons, and ex-girlfriends. The drummer keeps them punk, and the vocals are raspy without the Rancid spit. There isn’t time for guitar solos; the story and the images they project are what keep you following each song. This is not just about one or two choice songs; they have a full record packed with quality material here, one that, even though released in August, is just now getting some exposure. They seem to be road dogs, constantly touring.

This one’s for fans of Hold Steady, Social Distortion, Whiskeytown, Gutterboy, Drive By Truckers, Marah. These kids know who they are and they tip their cap to their literary and musical heroes without ever copying anyone. Help them get to the other side - they deserve it. Gaslight Anthem is a classic new American rock n’ roll band and you need to hear their album now. Isn’t it fun when you and your friends find a band that you can wrap your arms around before the rest of the world does? Buy it here!
