Boss Martians

Pressure in the S.O.D.O.

Electrifying! The Boss Martians have been around for quite some time. I remember listening to them back when I still had a mohawk and wore boots and braces. Recent converts may be unaware that the Martians started out as a surf band, influenced in their earlier days by greats like local heroes The Ventures, but they also had a thing for The Zombies' brand of organ-driven, melodic pop. Pressure in the S.O.D.O., their latest album, is a perfect example of the tighter, more polished rock sound that the Boss Martians have morphed into since they got together back in the early ‘90s.

Unlike their earlier surf/garage efforts, Pressure in the S.O.D.O. consistently pays homage to rock mavens of the ‘70s. Nods to Deep Purple, Alice Cooper and even Steely Dan are unmistakable on this album. In addition to the hammering organ so essential to the BM sound, Pressure in the S.O.D.O. is filled with smokin’ hot guitar licks that make you wanna flip somebody off…just ‘cause you’re such a badass. It’s easy to imagine Evan Foster’s soulful and energetic vocals calling the listener to join the band in the boys’ room for some roughing up. Count me in. Their song “Mars is for Martians” must be mentioned, and not just because it is co-written and co-sung by Iggy Pop, but because it’s a Boss Martians anthem, a dirty little number that celebrates all kinds of nastiness – in alphabetical order! You’ve probably heard “Hey Hey Yeah Yeah” on the radio or more likely on TV? Yes, the guys are belting it out on E-trade commercials - not too shabby. Overall, Pressure conjures up images of tight jeans, muscle cars and strawberry lip gloss. It makes me feel kinda funny down there and I think I like it.

The Martians deserve tremendous credit for their evolution, although I have to admit, I’m especially fond of the monster reverb sound from their earlier releases. Recently, they have incorporated more of these surf instrumentals into their amazing live show. It is strongly advised to catch a Boss Martians performance. I guarantee you’ll be hooked.
