Music Releases 10-26-18
|Young & Dangerous
British glam-rockers The Struts return with their sophomore album, Young & Dangerous, four years after the release of their debut. Having recently wrapped up a tour with the Foo Fighters and announced their own headlining tour, the band now releases an album that proves it has no intention of slowing down. Pulling from influences like Queen, The Killers and The Strokes, Young & Dangerous showcases how The Struts have developed as a band and begun to carve out their own place.

Saves The Day have been through a lot over the past two decades: Van accidents, member changes, the emo explosion, and the adventures that carried the act and their fans from adolescence to adulthood. But they’ve never had a proper history of the band… until now. Saves The Day’s ninth album 9 tells the story of the band from the perspective of the band’s founder Chris Conley and does it in a way that’s as exhaustive as it is poetic and makes the listener a part of the songwriting process. From a narrative standpoint, 9 chronicles the epic story of a group of kids from New Jersey who realized their dream and became international sensations. However, on a more existential level, it shows how Conley “woke up” and became aware of his own consciousness through his relationship with music and the unbelievable adventures it inspired since he formed the act in 1997.

|I Wasn't Only Thinking About You... [LP]
Oh Pep! have returned with their second full-length that takes their alt-folk to a whole new level of delicious pop. Chock full of memorable hooks, sing-along moments I Wasn't Only Thinking About You…, proves itself as a career-defining feat. The band gets its Oh from Olivia 'Liv' Hally (vocals, guitar) and its Pep! from Pepita Emmerichs (violin, mandolin), who met at secondary school in Victoria. Their harmonies are sweet, with lyrics that are thoughtful, deep, funny and poetic.

|Ic-01 Hanoi [LP]
While recording Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s latest release, Sex & Food, Ruban Nielson, his longtime collaborator Jacob Portrait and his brother Kody Nielson, found themselves in the Vietnamese city of Hanoi playing and recording with local musicians at Phu Sa Studios. The studio, normally used for traditional Vietnamese music, found the band jamming on sessions dubbed IC-01 Hanoi: exploring the outer edges of the band’s influences in Jazz, Fusion and the avant-garde. The musicians, along with Ruban and Kody’s father, a Jazz musician in his own right, helped lay down the unique textures heard throughout Hanoi. At its core Hanoi is a record of exploration, finding its closest antecedent in Miles Davis’ experimental On The Corner – itself a record full of nods toward avant-garde composers and Jazz outsiders alike. Hanoi finds Ruban amplifying and stretching out on lead guitar, with a blown-out and wandering fuzz tone that slinks throughout the sessions. Kody and Jacob match Ruban’s melodic diversions with aplomb, mining their talents to finding as easy a role in the fusion of funk as they do in the more ambient and abstract tangents on Hanoi.
|Unknown Mortal Orchestra||$18.99|
|Fudge Sandwich [LP]
Take a tour through Ty Segall's musical psyche with his new solo album, Fudge Sandwich, a collection of Segall's take on eleven songs that were originally done by other people. These aren't just cover versions. Cover versions happen at weddings and high school band battles. The songs here are what happens when someone loves a song so much, they need to get inside it and let it propagate and transform into what it would have been if they had actually written it. Equal parts reverence and reimagination, this album shows Segall inhabiting the world of a song's intent, filtering it through the muse that drove this year's exceptional Freedom's Goblin. Cluttered, passionate and inspired, the songs are barely recognizable, irresistible and by album's end, present a cohesive collection that stands proudly alongside the best of Segall's considerable output.

|Here If You Listen [LP]
DAVID CROSBY, who turned 77 this month, has experienced a late career resurgence unlike almost any other in the history of rock & roll. Becca Stevens, Michael League and Michelle Willis backed Crosby on his tour in support of 2016’s acclaimed Lighthouse album, and BrooklynVegan said of the quartet’s NYC show at Town Hall, “they also clearly help him sound great. Crosby’s voice has aged wonderfully, but you’d have to assume the younger singers’ harmonies are part of what made everything sound so rich last night. This project reflects the collaboration with that amazing group.

|You Won't Get What You Want [2LP]
Some bands love having very ironic names. When a band is called Daughters, listeners might expect: (1) a female-dominated or female-fronted lineup, and (2) an introspective folk-rock or adult alternative approach along the lines of the Indigo Girls, the October Project, or 10,000 Maniacs. But those who have been following Daughters since their official formation in 2001 (or before that when they were As the Sun Sets) know that they aren't a female act and that they don't sound anything like the Indigo Girls, the October Project, or 10,000 Maniacs. Daughters are guys, and they're guys who provide a jagged, dense, highly abrasive dose of noise rock on this self-titled 2010 release. Daughters have been described as everything from mathcore or math metal to alternative metal to grindcore (although this album doesn't sound like Cannibal Corpse or Carcass), but noise rock is the term that best captures Daughters in 2010 -- and make no mistake: this is an extremely noisy album. Daughters thrive on being as noisy as possible, and they love to be as frantic and as nervous as possible. A lot of that nervousness comes from a healthy appreciation of punk; they clearly appreciate punk's high-speed aggression as much as they appreciate metal's heaviness. Combine that frantic, nervous, punk-minded tension with a lot of metallic heaviness, and you have an album that leaves a trail of destruction in its wake.
|Daughters||$25.98 Digital: $9.99|
|3 (The Purple Album)
3 serves as the follow-up to Lukas Graham's eponymous global debut, which racked up over 23 million units in worldwide consumption, saw "7 Years" hit number one in 13 different countries, and earned the band three GRAMMY®Award nominations - including both Record and Song of the Year.

Andrea Bocelli has teamed up with some of the hottest musical stars on the planet for his forthcoming album Si reuniting with his friend Ed Sheeran after their chart-topping Perfect Symphony on a brand new song called Amo Soltanto Te (written by Ed with lyrics by Tiziano Ferro) and joining with pop sensation Dua Lipa on the single If Only . Crossover superstar Josh Groban and classical soprano Aida Garifullina also duet with Bocelli on the record, which is released on Sugar/Decca on 26th October. It is his first album of new material in 14 years 16 brand new songs which celebrate love, family, faith and hope. At the centre of the new record is a spine-tingling duet between father-and-son, as 20 year-old Matteo Bocelli steps into the limelight to duet with Andrea on Fall On Me a beautifully poignant song which reflects the bond between parent and child. It will appear in the end credits of the hotly-anticipated new Disney film, The Nutcracker and The Four Realms, starring Keira Knightley, Mackenzie Foy, Helen Mirren and Morgan Freeman, to be released on 2nd November. Andrea explains how his voice compares with Matteo's: Technically they are very different, but there is one thing that makes them most similar: the attitude. That characteristic way of expressing yourself through your voice. This makes Matteo and I very similar. But that is something that you cannot learn, that cannot be taught. That is something you are born with.

MUSCLE SHOALS, ALABAMA . . . Since the 1960s, the city has been known for music – developing the "Muscle Shoals Sound", as local recording studios (including FAME Studios in the late 1950s and Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in 1969) produced hit records that shaped the history of popular music. This tribute to THOSE songs and THAT history reigns supreme with some of the most popular and influential artists participating in music history today. From Chris Stapleton, Willie Nelson, Lee Ann Womack and Jamey Johnson, to Demi Lovato, Steven Tyler, Keb’ Mo, Grace Potter and Aloe Blacc, an absolute cavalcade of stars lend their own personal embellishment to these classic songs.

Pleasureland is the newest work from Canadian-born artist Haley McCallum, known professionally as Haley Bonar for the past 15 years. In 2017, she changed her surname to reflect her maternal family name, now performing under the name HALEY. Stark, minimalist, and melodically entrancing, Pleasureland stands in a class entirely of it's own, forging new but not unfamiliar ground for the Minnesota-based artist HALEY. Harkening back to her 2011 release Golder, which featured two instrumental tracks, McCallum has taken the instrumental concept a few steps further in a bold musical statement which features no vocals.

|Tusk II [LP]
It’s been said that if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything. Well, it was nearly impossible to knock over a mammoth. ROYAL TUSK dig in their heels, defiantly hold their ground, and fight with fury. These blue-collar troubadours from the Great White North are steadfast champions of the majesty of kickass riffs, meaty hooks, a thick bottom end, and loud guitars. This is music with meaning, sometimes even a message, that’s always built around a powerful vibe and uncompromising passion. Royal Tusk is a deeply soulful celebration, brimming with working class optimism and tempered by renegade realism. On their sophomore-slump-smashing Royal Tusk II, the group summons the effortless energy of an era of rock music when bands weren’t content to merely reverse-engineer hit-making formulas to move units.

|In This Time [LP]
Wick Records is honored to release the sophomore long player from Virginia's Troglodytic Troubadours, the group with the antediluvian je ne sais quoi: The AR-KAICS! Recorded in three days at Adrian Olsen's Montrose Studio and Produced by Wayne Gordon (Black Lips, King Gizzard..., John Spencer Blues Explosion, Michael Rault,) In This Time is a low brow journey through the teen-beat sounds of the 1960's... AND BEYOND! From the opening crude thud of "Don't Go with Him, the Velvet Underground-tinged swagger of "She's Obsessed with Herself", the breezy, late-period psych of "Long Way Down," to the unpretentious, sap-free balladry of "It's Her Eyes," The Ar-Kaics flex their deft understanding of the subtle intricacies that define bonafide garage rock. A must for fans of the Back from the Grave compilations.

In the contemporary era of progressive music, there are few bands who can claim to be as innovative, creative and restively dynamic as Haken. Since their inception in 2007, they've shown over four previous studio albums, one EP and a live release that they never stand still, merely satisfied to rely on past triumphs. Rather, Haken always look for ways to challenge themselves as musicians and artists, and also to keep the listeners on their collective toes."We don't like to make simple music," laughs vocalist Ross Jennings. "We always aim to defy expectations, and I believe we've surpassed what we aimed to achieve with our new album."The band's fifth studio record sees them going in a heavier direction with the music. "We've always had a heavy influence", explains guitarist Charlie Griffiths, "but it was obvious from the riffs that were naturally coming out of us early in the writing process that this would be a more metal album. These are some of the most riff driven songs we've ever written."Vector was mixed by Adam 'Nolly' Getgood, formerly bassist with Periphery.

|Live In The Ussa
Pioneers, philosophers, trailblazers, in short: prophets always have to assemble their flocks abroad before they find due recognition in their homelands. This also applies to the German art form KMFDM. Whether in the US, Japan, Australia or elsewhere (where they sold hundred thousands of records and embarked on various sold out tours) - for over a quarter of a century they are the epitome and synonym for a musical style of the harder variety: Industrial Rock. KMFDM pioneered the crossover between techno/dance and heavy metal, creating their unique sound and were one of the first bands to bring Industrial Rock to mainstream. They influenced bands such as Rammstein with whom they were touring the US - with KMFDM headlining. The band was founded in 1984 and rapidly evolved year by year through intense experimentation and touring. They have managed to redefine themselves with every new release. Recorded during their roaring USA tour in late 2017, "Live in the USSA" perfectly captures the intoxicating atmosphere that was present throughout the whole journey. The album features a diverse and exciting selection of six of their favourite songs from their latest studio album "HELL YEAH" and six of their classic UltraHeavy Beat-hits. Thus, "Live In The USSA" commemorates and immortalizes a brilliant experience for fans and band alike.

|Hell On An Angel [LP]
Merging a sonically progressive palette with a tasteful reverence for the past, the Burgin, KY native has crafted a slice of solid country gold — one that’s fueled by plainspoken lyrics and a rich baritone voice — on his Dave Cobb-produced debut. The album captures vivid snapshots of the people Carmichael grew up around: hardworking, bighearted folks taking life one day at a time, sticking together through the good times and the bad with honesty, dignity and faith.
Carmichael mixes a unique breed of influences ranging from Waylon and Haggard to Lynyrd Skynyrd mixed with the pedigree of his two uncles Eddie Montgomery (of Montgomery Gentry) and John Michael Montgomery. Armed with a desire to protect real country music, Carmichael was always encouraged to own his talent and pay his dues.
As a songwriter at the age of 18, Carmichael began collaborating with some of country’s most talented writers, but no Nashville resident had a bigger influence than GRAMMY award-winning Cobb (Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell), whose stewardship helped guide ‘Hell On An Angel’ from a dream to a reality.

|The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society [LP]
THE KINKS ARE THE VILLAGE GREEN PRESERVATION SOCIETY Somewhat overlooked upon its release in November 1968, The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society is now seen as one of the best British albums ever recorded. Created in difficult circumstances by a band who refused to follow fashion, it is an album of timeless, perfectly crafted songs about growing up and growing old, and the decline of national culture and traditional ways. Enduring and unsurpassed, with its wit, sadness, quiet anger, regret and charm, it is generally considered the high point of The Kinks’ outstanding career and Ray Davies’ masterpiece. A calm, nostalgic album which feels like a sweet, hazy dream but with endless layers of musical and lyrical innovation, The Village Green Preservation Society’s defiantly British sensibilities became the foundation of generations of British guitar pop. God Save The Village Green!

On their aptly titled third full-length album and first for Fearless Records, Signals, Devour The Day didn't just blur the line between musician and listener; they abolished it entirely. The trio Blake Allison [lead vocals, guitar], Joey 'Chicago' Walser [bass, backing vocals], and Ronnie Farris [drums] focused on getting closer than ever before by preserving the purity of these 'signals' and honoring the crowd above all. 'If you re part of the rock community, you've chosen to be a musical outsider,' says Joey. 'The choice represents a certain integrity. We respect that so much. There's no distinction or hierarchy between us and the people who listen to us. We're all the same. A lot of times, that's not clear in this business. It's stuck in The Matrix where the artist is on a pedestal and the fan is below. We said, 'F@$% all of this tired bullsh$%',' he exclaims. 'We're admitting we don't have ownership of these songs. Rather, they're all gifts we've organized and put into the soundtrack for a community story. This is an escape from the norm. We're just honored to have the opportunity to make another record and put everything into it.' 'We're celebrating this community first,' adds Blake. 'Whether or not we make music, we're recognizing the fact we're lucky enough to do this. We can't take credit for the ability to create. We highlight the fact it's a gift on this record by looking at everything from a different angle.'

'Goners' is the fifth album from acclaimed singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Laura Gibson. Gibson co-produced the songs with engineer and friend John Askew (from her 2016 album, 'Empire Builder'), she enlisted a number of long time collaborators, including: guitarist/synth extraordinaire Dave Depper (Death Cab for Cutie), drummer and found-sound percussionist Dan Hunt (Neko Case), and stand-up bassist Nate Query (the Decemberists); then built horn and woodwind arrangements with Kelly Pratt (St. Vincent and David Byrne, Father John Misty) and imaginative string parts with Kyleen King (Stephen Malkmus, Case/Lang/Veirs). It marks the first record Gibson made after completing a MFA in writing. Her language has never felt more alive, her storytelling sharper, her imagination looser. I wanted to aim for wildness in my lyrics, not perfection. Trauma and grief are far messier than the stories we make of them. Despite this, we will forever keep telling our stories to each other

Aviary is LA composer Julia Holter's most breathtakingly expansive album yet, full of startling turns and dazzling instrumental arrangements. The follow-up to her critically acclaimed 2015 record, Have You in My Wilderness, it takes as its starting point a line from a short story by Etel Adnan: "I found myself in an aviary full of shrieking birds." It’s a scenario that sounds straight out of a horror movie, but it’s also agood metaphor for life in 2018, with its endless onslaught of political scandals, freakish natural disasters, and voices shouting their desires and resentments into the void.

|Reason For The Season
Growing up in my household in Southern California on the corner of Mt. Vernon & Fairway, Music was an integral part of life, But there was no other time of the year where music was more part of life than during the holidays. The grand piano, organ and harp in the living room provided the instrumental backing to all the vocals. The Holidays were a time of family get-togethers, gift giving , wonder feasts and most memorably, Christmas carols sung in harmony with one another. Songs Like “Jingle Bell Rock” and “Little St. Nick” combined with songs that remind us of the Reason for the Season; celebrating an event that took place in the little town of Bethlehem over 2000 years ago, the birth of Jesus, which for many became a birth of hope , peace, unity & love. As the words of “O Holy Night” say “His Law is love and His gospel is peace, “Jesus taught us to love one another. That message needs to be heard today more than ever before. So, as we celebrate and enjoy all the wonderful traditions of the holiday season, Lets hold in our hearts the Reason for the Season. Peace & Love Mike Love

This recording of Keith Jarrett's extraordinary 2006 solo performance at Gran Teatro La Fenice in Venice finds Jarrett entering one of Italy s most famous classical venues and channeling the flow of inspiration to shape something new. In this case, a suite of eight spontaneously created pieces referencing everything from the blues to atonality to heart-rending ballads. From the first flurry of notes, it is a consistently captivating journey. Release of La Fenice is timely: The 62nd International Festival of Contemporary Music of the Biennale di Venezia has honored Keith Jarrett with its Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. It's the first time that a jazz musician has received this award, which has previously been given to contemporary composers including, in recent decades, Luciano Berio, Pierre Boulez, György Kurtág, Helmut Lachenmann, Sofia Gubaidulina and Steve Reich.

With his unmistakable baritone, Turner brings new life to gospel standards including Amazing Grace, I Saw the Light and Swing Low plus, Turner adds original songs to the album like the self-penned title track I Serve A Savior, The River (of Happiness) written by his wife Jennifer and his eldest son Hampton, and a new live version of Turner's first big Platinum-selling hit Long Black Train. All Clara (Mackenzie Foy) wants is a key a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box that holds a priceless gift from her late mother. |A Short Story About A War [Limited Edition Translucent Tan LP]
Shad is a Canadian rapper with four solo albums under his belt, one R&B side-project, a Masters degree and numerous accolades. On October 26, 2018, he will release his highly-anticipated concept album entitled A Short Story About A War. In addition to three of his records being nominated on the Short List of the prestigious Polaris Music Prize, TSOL won the 2011 Rap Recording of the Year at the Juno Awards. Since then, Shad has elevated his practice by emerging as a vital broadcaster. After hosting CBC Radios q, he went on to host the Hip-Hop Evolution docuseries, whose 2016 season on HBO Canada earned both a Peabody Award and an International Emmy Award.
A Short Story About A War tells the story of a fictional world consumed by war, with various factions and philosophies clashing, and in the middle of it all, one character who doesnt believe in the power of bullets. The poetic storytelling weaves its way through themes of migration, environment, economics, politics, and most critically, the deepest parts of our spirit. This music was created in collaboration with dozens of musicians and engineers: From genre-less luminaries like Kaytranada, 2oolman of A Tribe Called Red, and Lido Pimienta, to crafty indie rockers Yukon Blonde, and Toronto rap vets Ian Kamau, Eternia, and DJ T Lo. Their contributions bring multiple textures and colours to the singular vision Shad created. In the end, this serious record is a joy to listen to, full as it is of pop craftsmanship that doesnt turn a blind eye to human nature.
On the heels of Eric Bibb’s Grammy nominated "Migration Blues" comes his most ambitious project to date, the 2-disc set "Global Griot." It is easy to point to Eric’s accomplishments. A five-decade career recording with folk and blues royalty. Two Grammy nominations and multiple Blues Foundation awards. A following that not only crosses borders, it crosses continents. His father, the late Leon Bibb, was an activist, actor, and folk singer who marched at Selma with Dr. Martin Luther King. Eric’s youth was spent immersed in the Village folk scene. Names like Dylan, Baez, and Seeger were visitors to his home. He was deeply influenced by Odetta, Richie Havens, and Taj Mahal. And he has synthesized all of that into his inimitable style. Troubadour is the word that best describes him. He slides neatly between genres as he builds bridges with musicians from the UK and Europe, pickers from North America, and kora players from West Africa. “GRIOT - (in West Africa) a member of a caste responsible for maintaining a oral record of tribal history in the form of music, poetry and storytelling.” “It’s an honor and a great pleasure to introduce you to my fellow Global Griots with this gathering of the tribes.” – Eric Bibb
|Crush Crusher [LP]
In writing Crush Crusher, Medford committed herself to exploring her own issues with self-image, self-respect/worth, and the responsibility she has felt to others. Album opener “Hiding” was one of the first songs she wrote for the record while living in a frigid Brooklyn apartment during a winter break amidst her grueling tour schedule. In the song, Medford reflects on an interpersonal relationship that fell apart because of an inability to feel supreme comfort in sharing all the pieces of herself with someone. Nevertheless, a hopeful demeanor shines through on “Hiding” and in her writing across the album, with lyrics that embrace life’s hurdles and make them feel a little less scary. Much of Crush Crusher’s songs deal with Medford’s internalized pressure to become a caretaker in many of her close friends’ lives. As a defense mechanism for her own insecurities, Medford projects a sense of invincibility and benevolence to feel more deserving of the love received from others; we hear this on “Holographic Jesus” when she repeats the phrase “the sun built me to shade everybody,” characterizing the sacrifice and responsibility she feels in ways that could easily go unnoticed. “Holographic Jesus” ultimately represents a façade of strength that Medford has clung onto and, in true Taurus fashion, is stubborn to let go of. Musically, Crush Crusher is full of dissonant open chords and abnormal progressions, finding beauty in a level of conflict not seen on Shapeshifter. To help achieve this expansive-but-focused sound, Medford enlisted the help of someone who was just as ambitiously experimental in their approach, producer and engineer Gabe Wax (Deerhunter, The War on Drugs, Soccer Mommy). Medford and Wax set up shop at Rare Book Room studios in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and completed the basic tracking with musicians Simon Hanes on bass and Max Almario on drums. “Coming into a space where some of my biggest inspirations like Bjork, Dirty Projectors, and Deerhunter had all once also recorded, I felt determined to push myself and test every boundary that I may have subconsciously created along the way. Gabe made me feel comfortable with attempting anything,” Medford says. By the end of the recording process, IAN SWEET wound up with an unconventional assortment of songs featuring disparate elements of psych-rock, trip-hop, and shoegaze that together forged a sound uniquely her own.

The Blue Stones -- guitarist/vocalist/lyricist Tarek Jafar and percussionist/backing vocalist Justin Tessier – are set to release their new album Black Holes,” later this year. The album showcases an incredibly diverse palette of influence. Although they’re a duo, it’s unfair to limit the comparisons just to The Black Keys and The White Stripes. The weight of Led Zeppelin, the grit of Hendrix and groove from hip-hop artists like J. Cole and Kanye are all there. But in an effort that’s unlike any other in contemporary rock, the result is something entirely unique to today’s musical landscape.
