New Release Round-Up 05-12-14
RHETT MILLER WITH BLACK PRAIRIE - The Traveler - ATO Records
Rhett Miller, lead singer of boozy raucous rockers The Old 97s, releases his new solo album, The Traveler. Recorded with Black Prairie (members of The Decemberists) and produced by Chris Funk, The Traveler showcases a relentless and seemingly ageless songwriter honed by years on the road.
EMMYLOU HARRIS & RODNEY CROWELL - The Traveling Kind - Nonesuch
The Traveling Kind follows the longtime friends' first duet album, 2013's Old Yellow Moon, which won Best Americana Album at the 56th annual Grammy Awards as well as two awards at the 2013 Americana Music Association Honors & Awards Show, for Album of the Year and Duo/Group of the Year. The album also debuted at #4 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart.
SURFER BLOOD - 1000 Palms - Joyful Noise Records
1000 Palms marks a return to Surfer Blood's DIY ethos. Abandoning the big time studio, the band decided to head back home to self-record and self-produce their third full-length album. Free of major label influence, Surfer Blood has delivered a uniquely compelling album, unlike anything in their catalog. The story of 1000 Palms began on January 1st 2014, after playing a New Year's show in Portland, OR. The band decided to stick around for the rest of the month, renting a practice space and sorting through a backlog of ideas. By February, as their lease ran out, Surfer Blood had recorded demos for most of the tracks that are now featured on their third LP.
SNOOP DOGG - Bush - Sony
Snoop Dogg's new album is Bush, available this week. The album is entirely produced by friend and Grammy Award-winner Pharrell Williams, and is the latest offering from one of music's most prolific and revered trendsetters.
INCUBUS - Trust Fall (Side A) EP - Island
The new EP by Incubus marks 20 years since the release of their indie debut album in 1995, Fungus Amongus. Incubus went on to release six studio albums on the Epic/Immortal label (the last three produced by Brendan O'Brien), achieving RIAA gold, platinum and multi-platinum success; as well as five live albums. Four of their songs have hit #1 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart, including "Drive" (2000, also Top 10 Pop), "Megalo-maniac" (2003), "Anna-Molly" (2006), and "Love Hurts" (2008).
ROISIN MURPHY - Hairless Toys - PIAS America
Formerly of early ‘00s dance-pop favorites Moloko and creator of some of that decade’s most adventurous solo electronic music albums, the unmistakable Rosin Murphy returns with her new album Hairless Toys. For once the clichés of “eager anticipation” and “welcome return” are not misplaced. Her first album in eight years, Hairless Toys is a career-defining tour de force, tipping its hat to the dark disco of European house music, Casablanca Records and Grace Jones, while seamlessly taking in the freedom and organic spirit of jazz and gospel.
FAITH NO MORE - Sol Invictus - Ipecac Recordings
The music of Faith No More has lived through five presidents, endless wars, economic booms and busts, global meltdown and revolutionary rebirths. Throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s, the hard-edged group’s hybridized sound has scored the soundtrack to a time of change, and now in the 21st century, the legendary band has evolved once more to return with a powerful new album, Sol Invictus, and a new focus.
MADISEN WARD AND THE MAMA BEAR - Skeleton Crew - Glassnote
Already receiving widespread notice, the acclaimed duo recently made their network television debut on the Late Show with David Letterman performing the record's first single, "Silent Movies." Additionally, in advance of SXSW, NPR Music featured the band in their "Austin 100" playlist, asserting, "Timeless, mother-son roots-folk, on the brink of ubiquity." Produced by Jim Abbiss (Adele, Arctic Monkeys), the 12-song album was recorded in Nashville during the winter of 2014-15.
TESSERACT - Odyssey / Scala - Century Media
TesseracT officially burst on the scene in 2011 with their debut album, One. Touring with the likes of Devin Townsend, Protest the Hero and Between the Buried and Me helped make them one of the most successful breakthrough acts in the progressive metal genre. 2013’s Altered State was nominated for the Progressive Music Awards Album of the Year.
