Although this year's event is being promoted as the 33rd annual Summer Fest, our Junction summer street festival has been a West Seattle tradition for 51 years! According to a 1969 issue of the West Seattle Herald, it all started in 1964, when it was known as the Hi-Yu Sidewalk Carnival and Junction merchants used to dress up in costumes to entertain the kids and compete for prizes. By 1969, the one-day sale was in full swing: Morton's Drugs sold hot dogs for 14 cents at their snack bar, Husky Ice Cream offered up three Irish Whisky chocolate bars for a buck, and Harper's Records had mono AND stereo vinyl for 99 cents each. The Hi-Yu Sidewalk Carnival later became known as the Junction Sidewalk Sale, before morphing into the current three-day-long Summer Fest. Hope you've enjoyed this little history lesson - see you at Summer Fest!
