New Release Round-Up 08-28-15

Originally released on Columbia as a home video on August 29, 1995, Mad Season: Live At The Moore is now available in a collectible double LP vinyl gatefold package with new liner notes penned by Mad Season drummer Barrett Martin especially for this 20th anniversary edition. The 2LP edition of Mad Season: Live at The Moore features live versions of "River Of Deceit," "Wake Up," a blistering cover of John Lennon's "I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier" and more.
MAD SEASON & THE SEATTLE SYMPHONY - Sonic Evolution: January 30, 2015, Benaroya Hall - Monkeywrench
Recorded live at Benaroya Hall in Seattle, WA, Mad Season performed a special show with the Seattle Symphony. The Mad Season lineup for this performance included surviving members: Mike McCready and Barrett Martin and featured vocalists: Chris Cornell, Jeff Angell, Kim Virant and bassist Duff McKagan. Special guests included: Temple Of The Dog: Matt Cameron, Stone Gossard, and Jeff Ament and saxophonist Skerik and Alice in Chains member Sean Kinney.
BEACH HOUSE - Depression Cherry - Sub Pop
Beach House is Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally. They have been a band for over a decade, living and working in Baltimore, MD. Depression Cherry is their fifth full-length record. This record follows the release of their self-titled album in 2006, Devotion in 2008, Teen Dream in 2010 and Bloom in 2012. Depression Cherry was recorded at Studio in the Country in Bogalusa, Louisiana from November ’14 through January ’15. In general, this record shows a return to simplicity, with songs structured around a melody and a few instruments, with live drums playing a far lesser role.
YO LA TENGO - Stuff Like That There - Matador Records
Rare is the band that can cover themselves. Rarer is the band that would even think of it and rarer still is a band that would return to the conception and re-imagine its first breakthrough record. Someone may have read recently that old quote about how “in not knowing history one is doomed to repeat it.” There’s not another band that I know that is less doomed than Yo La Tengo. As stated previously, the album features covers from bands other than themselves: The Cure, Hank Williams, The Lovin’ Spoonful and more. Stuff Like That There, a 14 song collection of covers, originals and reworking(s) happens to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the Yo La Tengo’s landmark 1990 album, Fakebook.
FOALS - What Went Down - Warner Bros
All of the truly transformative and era-defining albums have grappled with questions that are a world away from the bland bleatings of homogenized pop. Permanence and impermanence, life and death, solitude, vulnerability, intimacy, passion, rage, humanity - weighty issues that make demands of the people creating that music, and of all those who listen to it, too. What Went Down confronts these issues head-on.
THE PAPER KITES - Twelvefour - Nettwerk Records
Australian indie-folk outfit The Paper Kites release their sophomore album, Twelvefour on Nettwerk Records. Produced by Phil Ek (Father John Misty, Fleet Foxes, Band of Horses), it is the follow-up to the band’s debut album States. Written entirely between midnight and four in the morning, Twelvefour is a concept record that explores the theory that an artist’s creative peak lays within these hours. The Paper Kites’ music has been featured on numerous television shows including ABC’s Forever and Grey’s Anatomy, as well as The CW’s Reign.
HERMITUDE - Dark Night Sweet Light - Nettwerk Records
The Australian duo Hermitude have become genre trendsetters. 2012’s HyperParadise went platinum in Australia, and the group received Australia’s Music Prize. 2015 sees them make a veritable splash stateside at festivals including Lollapalooza, Governor’s Ball, SXSW, Lighting In A Bottle, and more. Most importantly, their fifth full-length album, Dark Night Sweet Light debuted at #1 on Australia’s ARIA album chart. Dark Night Sweet Light is a proper introduction to a worldwide audience.
