RSD Black Friday Pick Of The Day - Howlin' Wolf!
Howlin' Wolf - The London Howlin' Wolf Sessions - Brookvale Records
Our webmaster/editor Rod was turned on to this record at an early age...ten years old, to be precise. This was the first Howlin' Wolf record he ever heard, and this 1972 release set him up for the Wolf's classic Chess and Sun ouevre, which, of course, is unmatchable. The London Howlin' Wolf Sessions arrived near the end of the period of rediscovery of the classic blues masters, and the album was undeniably an attempt to turn a younger audience on to the Wolf. They flew him over to London, booked him in a studio with Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Charlie Watts & Bill Wyman and let the tape roll. Wolf demanded that his own guitarist Hubert Sumlin would participate in the session, and when Watts and Wyman were unavailable one day, Ringo Starr and Klaus Voorman were recruited for a few tracks. While it can't compare to the Wolf's earlier sides, it is indeed a very rocking blues album.
The folks at Looney Toons Records (store) / Brookvale Records (label) in West Babylon, New York, spent over three years preparing this Black Friday exclusive edition of this release. Here's what they have to say about it...(check the unboxing video below too)
"Every single part of this release was painstakingly considered to make sure the attention to detail with this release is by far the best possible. FIRST – THE SOUND of the record is brilliant, bright, clear, quiet and I think the best representation of this music absolutely possible. RTI did an outstanding job with this 180gram black vinyl. It was remastered by all available original sources and took us 2 years to remaster. The work was done by the great Jeffrey Norman of Mocking Bird Mastering in CA. SECOND – THE ART and this vinyl jacket is a piece of art. The images DO NOT do this justice. I challenge anyone to find a better jacket made. Stoughton Printing Co. did a SPECTACULAR job on this. There are layers on layers on layers of debossing effect, foil stamping, and the COLOR and trim POP beautiful. The jacket itself is a deluxe tip-on old school super THICK canvas. I am so proud of the release, and believe that this record is among the best re-issued vinyl pieces ever produced."
