New Release Round-Up 02-19-16
LAKE STREET DIVE - Side Pony - Nonesuch
Lake Street Dive release their Nonesuch Records debut album, Side Pony. The four band members—drummer Michael Calabrese, bassist Bridget Kearney, singer Rachael Price, and guitarist/trumpeter Michael "McDuck" Olson—worked with Nashville-based producer Dave Cobb (Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton, Secret Sisters) on the record. Tour dates to support Side Pony begin February 22 in Phoenix and include stops in Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, New York, and more. Side Pony takes its name from a song on the record that refers to a whimsical hairstyle, but it also serves as a metaphor for Lake Street Dive's philosophy and personality as a band. As Kearney puts it, "When we were settling on the album title, that one just stuck out to us as embodying the band's spirit. We've always been this somewhat uncategorizable, weird, outlying, genre-less band. That's the statement we wanted to make with this record: be yourself."
THE CAVE SINGERS - Banshee - Jagjaguwar Records
The Cave Singers remind us that it takes a village. They remain approachable while retaining the complexity of writing skills possessed by folks who have dedicated their lives to music. Their appreciation of varied sounds, the writing process, and performing in every type of venue, house and festival possible allows them to connect with those they speak to. Their passion for their craft translates from their recordings and resonates through their performances. The Cave Singers are the people's band.
RICK SPRINGFIELD - Rocket Science - Frontiers Records
Rick Springfield is an iconic rockstar who needs no introduction. Rocket Science is Rick's latest studio album which is, as usual, filled with personal lyrics, infectious riffs and giant hooks. Another pop/rock tour de force which shows once again the amazing talents of this timeless artist.
ANIMAL COLLECTIVE - Painting With - Domino
Painting With is the 11th full length Animal Collective album. For fifteen years they have been rewriting the musical map, their line-up and aesthetic shifting with each astonishing release as they continue their pursuit of a new psychedelia. The result: Painting With. Warm and personal, dizzying and high definition, concerned with art and the human experience, and the meeting of both - creating something elemental, joyous, and unmistakably Animal Collective.
WOLFMOTHER - Victorious - UME
When it was released in 2005, Wolfmother's eponymous debut was exactly what rock & roll needed: a meaty, beaty, big and bouncy genre resuscitator that not only broke through to the mainstream, but broke big. But ten years after their arrival, Wolfmother have returned with what could arguably be called their best work to date. With Victorious, [singer/guitarist Andrew] Stockdale once again arrives right on time: in an era dominated by single-song downloads, this is an album worthy of repeat listens from top to bottom.
MAVIS STAPLES - Livin' On A High Note - Anti
Mavis Staples has been a soul and gospel music legend for more than 50 years. With Livin' On A High Note, Mavis Staples has delivered the most joyful and uplifting record of her career. 12 original songs written exclusively for Mavis by some of the finest songwriters of our time including M .Ward, Ben Harper, Valerie June, Neko Case, tune-yards, Nick Cave, John Baptiste, Justin Vernon, Aloe Blacc, and more.
