New Release Round-Up 06-10-16
BAND OF HORSES - Why Are You OK - Interscope
Why Are You OK, the fifth full-length release for Band Of Horses, was produced by Jason Lytle and features guest appearances from Sera Cahoone, Jenn Champion, and Dinosaur Jr.'s J. Mascis. "After the mainstream ambitions of Infinite Arms and Mirage Rock, Band of Horses’s fifth album makes something of a triumphant return to the wide-eyed, dreamy vulnerability that marked the Seattle band’s first two records. The default mode is anthemic indie-rock that pinpoints the place where wistfulness and euphoria collide, then showers it in effervescent harmonies and melodies. But the songs run the gamut from country-rock to Hag’s unlikely, reverb-laden nod to OMD’s synth hit 'Souvenir.' " - The Guardian
FITZ & THE TANTRUMS - Fitz & The Tantrums - Elektra
Fitz and The Tantrums' natural exuberance permeates their new self-titled album, which celebrates walking to the beat of your own drum. Lead singer Michael Fitzpatrick says of new record, "We've always tried to push ourselves at every turn. For our third album, we continued to challenge ourselves, taking care not to write the same record again." "Turn it up," Fitz exhorts at the top of album opener and first single "HandClap." The horn-and-beats fueled track captures the exhilarating sense of promise - and danger - that a night out and a new romance hold. The staccato "Complicated" paints a relationship that's packed with both chemistry and conflict and bursts into an unexpected cheer. Echo and otherworldly keyboards make "Tricky" an intoxicating dance-floor anthem and a warning to any future lover, while "A Place For Us," the album closer, encapsulates the band's belief that there is a place in the world for each of us to belong, regardless of our differences.
PAUL McCARTNEY - Pure McCartney - Hear Music
This is the only comprehensive collection released of Paul McCartney's solo works from his 45-year solo career. The collection was personally curated by Paul McCartney and many tracks have been remastered for this collection. "Me and my team came up with the idea of putting together a collection of my recordings with nothing else in mind other than having something fun to listen to. Maybe to be enjoyed on a long car journey or an evening at home, or at a party with friends. So we got our heads together and came up with these diverse play lists from various periods of my long and winding career. So jump in your hot rod or relax in your hot bath and give these ditties a spin and remember that if half of the pleasure we had in putting this collection together communicates itself to you, we'll all be riding high!" - Paul McCartney

PETER BJORN AND JOHN - Breakin' Point [Indie Exclusive Deluxe CD] - Ingrid
Breakin' Point is Peter Bjorn And John's seventh full-length studio album following up 2011's critically acclaimed Gimme Some and the 2006 million-selling US single "Young Folks" that started it all. The album marks their first new release in more than five years. On Breakin' Point the band had the opportunity to work with an impressive group of producers including Patrick Berger (Icona Pop, Robyn), Paul Epworth (Florence And The Machine, U2, Paul McCartney), Greg Kurstin (Sia, Adele), Emile Haynie (Lana Del Rey, FKA Twigs, Kanye West), Pontus Winnberg (Miike Snow) and Thom Monahan (Wild Nothing, Devendra Banhart). The result is a phenomenal album that finds the group reaching another career high. While Gimme Some was the Swedish trio's guitar-driven power pop record that beautifully captured the energy of the band's live show, Breakin' Point is about creating big pop songs, taking advantage of all that the studio has to offer and crafting an album that is complex while sounding effortless.
ELI 'PAPERBOY' REED - My Way Home - Yep Roc Records
Eli 'Paperboy' Reed has returned to the studio and crafted a new album that is at once back-to-basics and startlingly current. MOJO called the Boston-via-Mississippi singer the king of rhythm & soul, while Rolling Stone hailed his classic soul and horn-heavy R&B soaked with the blues, and NPR raved that he conveys the heart-wrenching emotion of Southern predecessors such as Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding. My Way Home represents a return to the sonic character that Reed's career began with, but it does more than that: It captures the essence of his sound. A sound that, over everything else, prizes feeling, energy, and, yes, soul.

GARBAGE - Strange Little Birds - Stunvolume / Vagrant Records
Garbage release their sixth studio album, Strange Little Birds, on the band's own label STUNVOLUME. Working initially in drummer/producer Butch Vig's basement and then at Red Razor Sounds in Los Angeles, Garbage drew on a variety of sources, from their recent fan letters back to the albums they loved growing up. "The guiding principle was keeping it fresh, and relying on instinct both lyrically and musically," said frontwoman Shirley Manson. Strange Little Birds is less fussed over than anything Garbage has ever made. "We fell in love with immediacy," adds Vig. Some will hear echoes of Garbage's 1995 debut album in Strange Little Birds including Manson herself. "To me, this record, funnily enough, has the most to do with the first record than any of the previous records," she says. "It's getting back to that beginner's headspace. In part, that's a result of not having anyone to answer to."
