New Release Round-Up 09-02-16

ANGEL OLSEN - My WomanANGEL OLSEN - My Woman - JagjaguwarANGEL OLSEN - My Woman
Anyone reckless enough to have typecast Angel Olsen according to 2013's Burn Your Fire For No Witness is in for a rethink with her third album, My Woman. The crunchier, blown-out production of the former is gone, but that fire is now burning wilder. Her disarming, timeless voice is even more front-and-center. Yet, the strange, raw power and slowly unspooling incantations of her previous efforts remain. The album is also available on Indie Exclusive Limited Edition Translucent Purple Vinyl.

HELMS ALEE - Stillicide - Sargent House Records
”This is one of the more sonically varied, genuinely arty metal albums you’re likely to listen to this year. Pulling in elements of sludge, post-rock, math-rock, noise, and plain old hard rock, there are changeups around every corner here, with the uniting factor being that everything is crushingly heavy. They hit so many beats here that it can be hard to keep track of: ‘Untoxicated’ is a shuddering noise/sludge stomp; the title track is an evil doom banger that takes a turn for the soaring and has a bit of an early Kylesa thing going on; ‘Galloping Mind Fuk’ actually made me laugh out loud with a Rage Against The Machine-style rap-rock passage; the verse section of ‘Bullygoat’ has a lovely, unsettling piece of melody that, call me insane, weirdly sounds kind of like Neko Case. In short, it’s really cool.” - Brooklyn Vegan

LISA PRANK - Adult Teen - Father/Daughter Records
Robin Edwards' Seattle-based solo project has gained a dedicated following thanks to her expert marriage of a bubbly sound and all-too-relatable lyrics. Following 2014's exceptional Crush on the World, Lisa Prank returns with a breezy but focused collection of meticulously crafted bedroom pop gems. Adult Teen, the project's new record, is dominated by bruised romanticism, introspective longing, and a palpable sense of desire, building a sound heavily influenced by 90s pop punk and the decade’s lighthearted culture. Robin Edwards performs all of the Lisa Prank songs live with an electric guitar and a Roland MC-505 drum machine, delivering memorable performances with ease. Thanks to that fact, Lisa Prank has become a project that's frequently celebrated among Edwards' peers, some of whom, including Bree McKenna and Emily Nokes of Tacocat, Julia Shapiro of Chastity Belt, and Andrew Sullivan and Ian Dugas of The Trashies contributed performances to the record. Lisa Prank has shared the stage with bands like Waxahatchee, Tacocat, and Pony Time. She also contributed vocals on Childbirth's Women’s Rights album for Suicide Squeeze Records. Adult Teen was recorded and mixed by Eric Randall (Tacocat), mastered by Carl Sa, with artwork by Faye Orlove.

ELUVIUM - False Readings On - Omnivore Recordings
False Readings On is the new album from renowned experimental composer, Eluvium. Its creation was originally inspired by themes of cognitive dissonance in modern society. By its conclusion it had become a mirror rather than a magnifying glass, evolving into an hour-long meditation on self-doubt, anxiety, and separation from one's self. There is an emotional lucidity and melodic ingenuity to Eluvium's music that has made him increasingly stand out from the sea of ambient artists that his earlier albums no doubt helped inspire. Sounding like an orchestra ceaselessly performing even as it sinks beneath an ocean of distortions and tape noise - with the occasional operatic voice piercing the surface - False Readings On is assuredly the most daring, dynamic, and distinct album of his luminous career.

2016 sound exploration of the tragic death of Nico (Velvet Underground) by the New York genre-bending music ensemble, featuring Patti Smith & her daughter Jesse Paris Smith, using the last poems written by Nico.

JAMES VINCENT MCMORROW - We Move - James Mahogany Books
James Vincent McMorrow's new LP, We Move, is his follow-up to 2013's acclaimed Post Tropical, marking a breathtaking and radical sonic shift for the Irish artist, in what is his most expansive, generous, and ambitious work to date. The 10-song collection features production from Nineteen85 (Drake, dvsn), Two Inch Punch (Sam Smith, Years & Years), and Frank Dukes (Kanye West, Rihanna), as well as mixing from the legendary Jimmy Douglass (Donny Hathaway, Timbaland).
