Lars's Record Store Day 2017 Picks!
It's a good day for Easy Street sales clerk Lars Swenson...the debut album by his band Bread & Butter is out today, plus we're sharing his most wanted list for Record Store Day 2017! Record Store Day is April 22nd....see ya then!
Shocking Blue - At Home - 12" LP
Dutch rock band Shocking Blue's influence reached well beyond their generation: their hit "Love Buzz" was the a-side of Nirvana's first single after all, and their biggest hit, "Venus" (1969) became a #1 hit for Bananarama in 1986. In addition to "Venus" and "Love Buzz, At Home features 4 bonus tracks that were previously available as b-sides on various long out of print 45s. In celebration of Record Store Day 2017, this worldwide imited edition of 2500 individually numbered copies is pressed on “Shocking Blue” coloured vinyl for the first time ever.
A Message From The Meters is a three LP set featuring all forty single sides the legendary New Orleans funk band released on Josie, Reprise & Warner Bros. - their entire singles output save for some obscure overseas sides. Most of the material has never been on vinyl since its original 45 release. That means that you not only get every hit along with its hard-to-find B-side but also the rare single mixes, including the especially rare original mono single mixes of the 1968-1971 Josie sides, very few of which have been reissued. These songs represent the mother lode of New Orleans funk, classic tracks like “Sophisticated Cissy,” “Cissy Strut,” “Look-Ka Py Py,” “Chicken Strut,” “Hand Clapping Song,” “Hey Pocky A-Way,” and more. And, with liner notes by Bill Dahl featuring quotes from Nocentelli, Neville, and Porter, this 3 LP set (one LP each of red, yellow, green vinyl) offers probably the best retrospective to date of this enormously influential band. (Limited worldwide release of 1000.)
The Pretty Things - The French EPs: 1964-69 - 7" vinyl box set
This new special RSD 7” Box brings together a collection of 4 EP's, originally released in France on the Fontana and Columbia labels and never before been collected together in the same vinyl box set. The box also contains two singles taken from the classic S.F. Sorrow that have been collated to form the fifth, four-track EP in the set.
U-Roy - Dread In A Babylon - 12" LP
U-Roy was a true reggae pioneer, dubbed The Originator for good reason. Bursting onto the Jamaican scene in the earliest 1970s, he pioneered the vocal approach called “toasting,” which in addition to branching out Jamaican music into a new era, was also heavily influential on an American genre in its infancy: rapping. U-Roy’s style and charisma are always on display, and – as with all of his classic records – the groove rules all. Presented for Record Store Day 2017 on black vinyl with a poster of the glorious, ganja-drenched cover art, it’s the perfect chance to revisit one of the more underrated voices in Jamaican musical history.
The Runaways - Cherokee & Gold Star Sessions
Unfortunately, Lars's final choice was just pulled from the RSD lineup...maybe we'll see it next year!
