More Info:As the album title implies, EL-P creates a dark, dystopian sonic universe filled with ominous basslines and thumping, punishing drums.
Seriously jammin' on this! For some years now, EL-P's productions have largely been a miss, which is confounding to the mind considering this not so long ago was the guy who established the Def Jux label, dropped 2002's Fantastic Damage, co-produced the late 20th-century defining album for Cannibal Ox,Cold Vein, and released solid works by Murs, Sonic Sum, Mr. Lif and RJD2's breakout early work, before he went all damn silly on us with the 'Austin Powers' soundtracks. Back in early '00s EL-P's production skills had both a sly, urban funk and an unusual, hard-hitting technological dysfunction that in combination brought the work to the next level. So much so that at the time even The Wirelauded him as the new face of New York's hip-hop underground. So... point here? His newest is *finally* the album that we should have seen after Damage, a funked up, drum-machine-driven mix of urban styles and super-dense assemblages of beats and samples, hyper-complex angles, and mad geometry. Oh, and it's got the jamz too. Really. Where wasWeareallgoingtoburninhellmegamixxx3 when we needed it in '04?"
